Strengthen Your Science
Despite its place as the third core subject, Science can often get overlooked in favour of Maths and English.
However, a high quality science curriculum offers so many opportunities to develop children’s skills, knowledge, and cultural capital, as well as adding to their experiences and interests.
Whether your science needs a complete update, a refresh, or simply refining, I can help. I’ve supported schools to develop their science for over 15 years, and will work with you to create a simple, straightforward approach to both teaching and leading science.
Key features of my science CPD – engaging, inspiring, simple, practical and helpful.
Create your science vision
All great science leaders make a conscious effort to visualize what they want science to look like in their school before they take action. Once you have clarity and direction, you can take simple, effective actions in the right direction to achieve your goals.
Join me in a 90 minute 1:1 session (remote or in-person) to establish your science vision for your school. The session is ideal for science leaders at any stage of their development, and perfect to do before you review science at your school. You will leave with a clear vision that is easy to articulate and ready to share with colleagues, as well as your next steps.
Spend either half or full day (depending on the size of your school) with me reviewing science provision. Here is a flavour of the things we could look for:
- coverage of the NC
- development of scientific skills
- quality of working scientifically
- approaches to the teaching & learning of science
- how purposeful & relevant your science is to your school & community
- progression of scientific enquiries
- how your science vision compares with the reality
- writing and maths in the science curriculum
- development of scientific vocabulary
By the end of the review you will have identified your priorities for development and your next steps.
Half or full day – from £275
Science CPD can take a variety of forms, from planning alongside teachers, working in the classroom, after school training or twilights, to a half day or full day training event.
I will work with you to devise and deliver your ideal science training event. Your staff will leave with plenty of ideas to use straightaway, a greater understanding of how to teach science and improved confidence to ‘have a go’.
From £200, cost and duration will depend on scope of work
Being a science leader can be a challenging position, as you try to balance your class responsibility with leading and developing a core subject. Having time to discuss your ideas, review current practice, plan your way forward, and have some time to reflect with an experienced science consultant can be invaluable.
Ways to support your leader development can include one 75 minute coaching call for £100, a set of six 75 minute calls for £540, half-day bespoke subject leader support for £275, or a full day at £550.
Science leader development
One of the most effective pieces of CPD we can do is to spend time planning high quality sequences of work with individual/small groups of teachers. Along with my expertise and knowledge of primary science, I have a very simple and effective method of planning purposeful, engaging and highly focused science sequences.
After a half day planning session your teachers will leave with a complete plan for the half term, more ideas for how to teach engaging science and most importantly, ownership of their own teaching and learning sequence.
Half day – £275, Full day – £550
Science leader workshops
If you are a cluster of schools, a MAT, or any other group who are looking to develop your science leaders in a cost-effective and collaborative forum, then my science leader workshops are what you are looking for.
I’ve been running highly valued and successful science leader workshops for over 15 years, where teachers can grow their networks, share best practice, and collaborate to develop in the areas that are most important to them.
From £400 for a half day session

“Claire came all the way to London to support Kilburn Grange School in developing our science curriculum. Claire’s common sense approach to planning is accessible and inspiring. She has reshaped my thinking about the science curriculum, as she challenges you to think about the WHY not just the HOW. Claire has a very clear insight into developing a school’s curriculum and has a wealth of ideas to bring the science curriculum to life. She works with the ethos of the school and personalises the curriculum for the needs of the school. Claire thinks outside the box and finds creative ways to make teaching and learning cross-curricular, practical and engaging. I wholeheartedly recommend Claire if your school is on a journey to developing your curriculum.”
Helen Khinich, Deputy Headteacher at Kilburn Grange School
“For the last ten years, Claire has been one of the major consultants working with Westminster Primary School for Science and the Curriculum. During this time, as Science co-ordinator, I have worked closely with her as we have developed a cross-curricular approach to our teaching. She has shown us how to make lessons fun, practical and inspirational; for example she has led staff development sessions showing us how to expand our teaching into areas beyond the classroom.
Lessons which used to be dull and worksheet based are now, thanks to her, practical, inspirational and, most importantly, memorable for the children. This is the result of her two-fold approach to bringing about change. Firstly, she persuaded staff to attend her courses where she explained new approaches to science teaching but then she followed this theory with visits into school when she demonstrated how to put her ideas into action.
Staff warm to her easy-going, friendly personality. Her inter-personal skills are excellent and she manages to make everyone feel known by her. Given the number of schools she visits and the large number of staff she sees in the course of a year, this is no mean feat. She is well prepared for each visit, able to pick up from where she left off on her previous time in school. This means no time is wasted and she provides value for money.
I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Claire Holt to work with staff and children in your school.”
